Caregiver and the Labour Office: Support, Duties and Practical Advice

Print

Taking care of a loved one doesn’t mean you have to be left without help

Caring for a sick or dependent person is mentally, physically, and often financially demanding. Many people leave their jobs to be available for their loved ones 24/7. But what happens when you lose your income? And did you know that even a caregiver can be registered with the Labour Office and receive support? This article is here to help – so you know what you’re entitled to, what you need to do, and what to avoid.

Are you searching for how a caregiver can be registered with the Labour Office? How to apply as unemployed while providing care? Whether health and social insurance is paid by the state? This article explains the conditions, entitlements, and practical steps for caregivers dealing with the Czech Labour Office.

📘 Can you be registered as a job seeker?

Yes, under certain conditions a caregiver can be registered as a job seeker. It doesn’t depend solely on whether you’re receiving the care allowance, but on the extent of your caregiving:

  • If your care responsibilities do not allow you to work, you can be listed as a person interested in employmentrather than a job seeker – meaning you won’t be required to actively seek work but can still be on record for health insurance coverage or support.

  • If your care is partial or flexible, you can be fully registered as a job seeker – possibly qualifying for unemployment benefits.

In both cases, you’ll need to provide proof of caregiving (e.g., a decision on the care allowance + a sworn statement about the extent of care).

💰 Will the state pay your health and social insurance?

If you provide care for someone who is dependent (Level II–IV) and you’re not working or self-employed, the state may pay your health insurance.

To also have social insurance (used for pension calculations) paid for you, these conditions must be met:

  • You’re providing personal care (not just occasional help or assistance from a distance),

  • It’s not your main source of income (i.e., caregiving is unpaid),

  • The care is provided within the Czech Republic.

Social insurance contributions are usually only covered if you’re missing required insurance years for your pension. The Labour Office can guide you through your options.

🧾 What to bring to the Labour Office?

It depends on how you want to be registered:

  • Job seeker – you’ll need your ID, proof of termination from your last job, and confirmation of caregiving.

  • Interested person – you’ll also need to explain why you can’t be fully available for work (e.g., sworn statement, medical records, care schedule).

Ask whether you qualify for active labour market programs, such as retraining or support for part-time work if your care duties allow remote or part-time jobs.

⚠️ Common pitfalls and risks

  • ❗ Not reporting changes in caregiving duties – can lead to removal from records or recovery of benefits.

  • ❗ Dual benefits – e.g., receiving both the care allowance and full-time income without proper reporting – can lead to penalties.

  • ❗ Incorrect declarations – provide honest and clear information, as the office may investigate.
