Fake Tech Support: “Call Microsoft” – Then Your Bank Account Is Empty

Print

“A window popped up saying I had a virus and should call Microsoft support. The number looked official. I called – and the man connected to my computer. Minutes later, money was gone from my account.”

This is one of today’s most deceptive scams.
The victim truly believes they are speaking with official technical support – but it’s actually a scammer.
They gain remote access to the computer and through it, access bank accounts, passwords, and personal files.
What makes it so dangerous is that the scam appears credible and professional.

Fake tech support scams target users with limited computer and internet experience.
These are well-planned attacks that may constitute fraud (§ 209 of the Czech Criminal Code), unauthorized use of a payment instrument (§ 234), breach of confidentiality of messages (§ 182), and in some cases unauthorized access to a computer system (§ 230).
Filing a criminal complaint as soon as possible is key to preserving digital evidence.

📌 Common Signs

  • A pop-up on your screen warns of a virus

  • Offers a phone number for technical support (e.g., Microsoft, Apple)

  • Calls in Czech or English – often with a foreign accent

  • Request for remote access to your computer (e.g., via AnyDesk, TeamViewer)

  • During the session, you’re asked to log into online banking

  • After the call, you discover missing money

⚖️ Possible Criminal Charges

  • Fraud (§ 209)

  • Unauthorized use of a payment instrument (§ 234)

  • Breach of confidentiality of messages (§ 182)

  • Unauthorized access to a computer system (§ 230)

🧾 What Evidence Should You Gather?

  • Screenshot of the popup or warning message

  • Notes or recordings of the phone call

  • Name and number of the caller (if available)

  • List of transactions that occurred

  • Details of what access the scammer gained

❗ Risk

This scam is psychologically advanced – the scammer speaks calmly, professionally, and with confidence.
They first create panic (“you have a virus”), then act like a savior (“let me help”), and meanwhile take over your computer and finances.
Victims often question whether it was even a crime – but it absolutely is. And it should be reported.
