Disability Pension and Staying Abroad: When the Payment May Be Suspended and How to Respond

Print

“Just visiting my daughter in Germany for a few months.” “My husband wants to spend the winter in Spain.” “My son took me to Norway, where he works.”
These sound like ordinary situations — but if you’re receiving a disability pension, even a short stay abroad can lead to serious trouble. Many people don’t realize that a missed letter, an unreported change of address, or the assumption that “someone already knows” may result in the suspension or even termination of their pension.

👉 Disability Pension – From Entitlement to Appeals (Main Guide)

Disability pension and foreign travel. When can your pension be stopped? Can you receive your disability pension while abroad? Where to report a change of residence? What to do if you receive a notice from the Czech Social Security Administration while staying abroad? This article answers the most common questions about traveling abroad while receiving a disability pension.

🧠 How Does Staying Abroad Affect the Pension?

  1. Short-term stay (up to 183 days) within the EU usually does not affect pension payments.

  2. Long-term stay or permanent move abroad requires applying for payment abroad (different rules and forms).

  3. Stay outside the EU/EEA requires a special process – some countries have bilateral agreements with the Czech Republic, others do not.

📮 What If the Pension Authority Cannot Reach the Pensioner?

  • If the pensioner does not receive their mail, payments may be suspended.

  • If a medical reassessment cannot be completed (e.g., due to lack of communication), the pension may be suspended or terminated.

  • If permanent residence is moved abroad without notice, the pension may be considered unlawfully paid.

✉️ Where to Report Foreign Stay?

  • To the Czech Social Security Administration – it’s best to submit a written notice with the foreign address and expected length of stay.

  • It’s also advisable to provide contact details (phone, email) and possibly appoint someone in the Czech Republic to receive mail on your behalf.

❌ Common Mistakes

  • The pensioner fails to pick up a request for medical review because they are abroad.

  • A change of permanent residence abroad is not reported.

  • The health insurance authority doesn’t know the person’s whereabouts → risk of losing health insurance coverage.

⚖️ Lawyer’s Recommendation

“Moving is not the problem. But everything must be reported on time and properly. I recommend authorizing someone in the Czech Republic to receive mail. I’ve seen people lose their pension just because of a missed letter.”
