Disability Pension and Another Pension at the Same Time: Is It Even Possible?
When Life Doesn’t Fit into Just One Box
“I had an accident, but I’ve been in early retirement for years. Does that mean I can’t get anything else?” This question comes up more often than you might think. Many people believe there’s only one type of pension. In reality, there are situations where you may be entitled to receive two pensions at the same time—for example, a disability pension and a widow’s pension, or an old-age pension and a survivor’s benefit. It’s not automatic, but if you know your rights, you can get more than what the authorities might tell you.

👉 Disability Pension – From Entitlement to Appeals (Main Guide)
Many people ask: Can you receive a disability and a survivor’s pension at the same time? What if I have partial disability and apply for old-age pension? How can I combine different types of pensions in 2025? Let’s dive into the details and answer these common questions.
When Can Pensions Be Combined?
The Czech Pension Insurance Act allows you to receive two different pensions simultaneously—but not in their full amounts.
The Most Common Pension Combinations:
Disability + Survivor’s Pension (Widow/Widower or Orphan’s Pension)
→ This combination is possible, but only one of the pensions is paid in full, while the other is limited to a basic statutory amount.Old-Age + Survivor’s Pension
→ Once you reach retirement age, you can combine an old-age pension with a widow’s or orphan’s pension.Disability + Old-Age Pension
→ When you reach retirement age, your disability pension is converted into an old-age pension. You cannot receive both, but the conversion is automatic and the higher amount is applied.
Key Rules:
The total amount paid never exceeds two full pensions.
This is called a concurrent pension claim, regulated under Sections 58 et seq. of Act No. 155/1995 Coll.
You must apply separately for the second pension. The Social Security Administration will not grant it automatically!
⚠️ Real-Life Examples and Common Pitfalls
Ms. Eva received a 2nd-degree disability pension. After her husband passed away, she applied for a widow’s pension. It was granted, but only the base amount was paid. Only after a consultation did she find out she was entitled to a higher payment—provided she submitted additional documentation and an official objection.
Mr. Josef feared that if he left retirement and returned to a disability status due to worsening health, he’d lose his benefits. In reality, such a return is not possible, but he could apply for a care allowance or related support.
