Disability Pension and Employment: You Can Work, But Be Aware of the Limits

Print

“I’m on a disability pension – am I allowed to earn some extra money? Will they take away my pension?”
This is one of the most frequent questions I get from clients. Many are afraid that if they start working, the Czech Social Security Administration (ČSSZ) will revoke their pension. Others don’t realize that there are clear rules they must follow. What if you want to work full-time? Or part-time? Let’s break it down clearly.

👉 Disability Pension – From Entitlement to Appeals (Main Guide)

Can I work while receiving a disability pension, extra income during disability, full-time job with a pension – these are the questions people ask every day. This guide will help you understand your rights and the limits set by law.

📘 Working while receiving a disability pension: Yes, but…

Receiving a disability pension does not prohibit you from working. You can be employed or self-employed. However:

  • You must be capable of performing work that matches your medical condition.

  • If your job contradicts your disability status, your pension may be revoked.

  • Your employer should be informed, especially for the mandatory medical examination.

  • If your health significantly improves, the ČSSZ may initiate a review procedure.

💡 What should you be careful about?

  • There is no specific income limit that would automatically lead to a loss of the pension.

  • Only the impact of your work on your health is assessed, not the amount of money you earn.

  • If you’re self-employed, it’s a good idea to notify ČSSZ of significant changes (not mandatory, but wise).

  • Be cautious with multiple jobs – it may seem like you’re handling a full work schedule.

🧾 Real-life example

Mrs. Marie was receiving a second-degree disability pension. She wanted to earn a little extra money on a short-term contract, just a few hours a week. That was acceptable. Two years later, however, she accepted a full-time office job. After a medical review, her condition was reassessed, and her pension was withdrawn. Today she says she would’ve been more cautious.

👩‍⚖️ Lawyer’s recommendation

I always advise clients to plan carefully and consult their doctor. With the right setup, earning extra income is no problem – but it’s essential to protect both your health and your pension rights. If you’re unsure, I can help you assess the risks or file objections or appeals where needed.
