Print

“If I’m on disability, will it just stop when I turn 65?”
Many people nearing retirement age ask this. The transition from disability pension to old-age pension is automatic, but it can feel confusing or even scary. So what exactly happens – and what should you prepare for?

Disability vs retirement pension, transition to old-age pension, Czech retirement after disability – these are some of the most searched questions in this area. Here are the answers.

📘 What happens when you reach retirement age?

If you’re receiving a disability pension of any grade and reach the legal retirement age:

  • Your pension is automatically converted to an old-age pension.

  • No need to apply, the change is handled by the authority.

  • The amount usually remains the same as your disability pension.

  • Your disability status ends – and with it, some associated protections or advantages.

⚠️ Risks and implications

  • You lose disability status, unless you hold a separate disability card (ZTP/ZTP/P).

  • You cannot combine multiple pensions after retirement.

  • Once transitioned, it’s not possible to return to disability pension.

  • Employer benefits related to disability may cease.

🧾 Real example

František received a 3rd-degree disability pension. When he reached retirement age, it was automatically converted to an old-age pension. The amount stayed the same, and he was even allowed to request a recalculation based on past earnings.

👩‍⚖️ Lawyer’s recommendation

If you’re nearing retirement, plan ahead. If you had additional income or insurance periods, it might be worth requesting a reassessment of the pension. If your case is complex (e.g., combining with other benefits), consult a lawyer in advance.
