When Work Helps, but You Don’t Want to Lose Your Pension

Imagine that after a long struggle, you’ve finally been granted a disability pension. It’s a relief – a sense of security. But also many questions: What if I want to work a little? Can You Work While Receiving a Disability Pension?

Yes, in principle, you can. Receiving a disability pension does not prohibit paid work, provided that your work does not contradict the health conditions under which the pension was granted.

The Main Conditions:

  • You must not perform work that is inconsistent with your medical condition.
For example, if you have heart failure and work physically in a warehouse, your pension might be withdrawn.

  • You may work full-time, but part-time agreements are more common.
Especially Agreements on Work Performed Outside Employment (DPP) or Agreements on Work Activity (DPČ).

DPP and Disability Pension

DPP is popular – it’s flexible, simple, and for amounts under CZK 10,000/month, no health or social insurance is paid (unless you have multiple agreements at once).

💡 Be careful with repeated earnings over CZK 10,000/month. If that happens, insurance contributions are deducted, and the social administration may review your disability status.

DPČ and Disability Pension

For DPČ, the insurance threshold is CZK 4,000/month. If you exceed this, your activity becomes “visible” to authorities in terms of pension review.

🛑 Consistent earnings above this limit may trigger a reassessment of your eligibility for the disability pension.

What Can Go Wrong?

During reviews, authorities examine whether your work fits your assessed capacity for work. If it doesn’t:

  • A review process may be initiated,

  • And in worse cases, your pension can be reduced or cancelled.

You may also be required to repay benefits if you failed to notify the authority about your work activities.

What Do I Recommend as a Lawyer?

“Don’t be afraid to work – just be mindful. It’s not about whether you work, but what kind of work you do and how it aligns with your diagnosis. I advise clients to keep records of their job scope, talk to their doctor, and ensure the job doesn’t contradict their medical findings.”
