Can You Have Debt Enforcement in Czechia Without Knowing It?
Your account is frozen. Your salary is garnished. But no one told you?
This happens more often than you think. People find out about a debt enforcement (exekuce) only when their bank account is blocked or their employer reduces their paycheck. They never saw a court order. Nothing came in the mail. And they have no idea who’s enforcing a debt – or why.
This article explains how enforcement can start without your knowledge, what to do immediately, and how to defend yourself – even if it feels like it’s too late.

– What legal options you have
– When it’s still possible to stop or reduce enforcement
📬 How can enforcement begin without your knowledge?
Debt enforcement in Czechia doesn’t require the executor to call or email you in advance. Legally, it starts when:
a valid enforcement title (court ruling) is issued,
the creditor requests enforcement,
the court approves the enforcement order,
a payment notice is sent – even if only presumed delivered.
If you moved and didn’t update your permanent address or ignored mail, you may be considered notified – even if you never read a word.
🔍 How to find out if you have enforcement?
Fastest ways to check:
Central Register of Executions (CEE) – online for a fee (https://ceecr.cz)
Contact the executor – if you know their name from your bank or employer
Ask your employer or bank – they must tell you the case number and executor
Check your data mailbox (datová schránka) – if you have one
⚠️ If enforcement began via presumed delivery (fikce doručení), the legal clock is already ticking – and your defense options may be limited.
⚠️ Real case: enforcement from a 2015 public transport fine
Tomáš changed his residence but never updated his permanent address. In 2015, he got a fine from Prague Public Transport – he never picked up the letter. In 2024, he received a bank SMS: “Account frozen due to enforcement.” The case had been running for 6 years. With legal help, part of the costs were cancelled – but he still overpaid by CZK 18,000.
💣 Most common mistake: doing nothing out of fear or shame
Many people feel overwhelmed and choose not to react. But the longer you wait, the higher the fees – and the lower your chance to fix it. Enforcement doesn’t stop on its own. Ignoring it is the most expensive option.
🛡️ Lawyer’s advice
If you discover enforcement through your bank or payslip:
find out who the executor is immediately
check if court letters were properly delivered
file a motion to stop or suspend enforcement, if you have grounds
don’t talk to the executor alone – get legal advice first
In many cases, enforcement can be cancelled entirely – but only if you act in time.
