Medical Assessment Committee for Care Allowance: What to Expect and What to Watch Out For

Print

“Mom tried to act strong – and ended up with nothing”

“When they came for the assessment, Mom smiled, tried to appear independent and said she was managing just fine. In reality, I help her with hygiene and meals. But in the end, the committee only assigned her Level I – meaning almost no allowance. We now know that was a mistake.”

Thousands of people every year are denied the care allowance or receive a lower amount than they deserve. Why? Because the Medical Assessment Committee only sees what you show them.

If you’re expecting a social inquiry and medical assessment as part of your care allowance application, it’s essential to understand what exactly will happen – and what to avoid. This article will guide you through the process, warn you of common mistakes, and help you handle it truthfully and with dignity.

📋 How the evaluation works: step by step

1) Social inquiry – the starting point

The process begins with a home visit from a social worker from the Labour Office. This worker:

  • observes how the person manages daily tasks (eating, moving, dressing, hygiene, etc.),

  • asks targeted questions,

  • writes a social report.

💡 Note: This is not just a formality – the report goes to the ČSSZ and is heavily relied upon by the medical assessor.

2) Medical opinion from the District Social Security Administration (OSSZ)

Based on the social inquiry and medical documentation, the OSSZ medical assessor:

  • evaluates the level of dependency on care,

  • classifies the applicant into Level I to IV,

  • sends a proposed decision to the Labour Office.

🛑 Applicants usually do not attend the medical committee in person – unless the case is particularly complex or disputed.

⚠️ Common mistakes that reduce your chances

  • The applicant tries to look more independent than they actually are

  • Saying things like “I can manage” even if it’s not true

  • Incomplete or missing medical documentation

  • No involvement of the caregiver

  • Ignoring requests for additional information from ČSSZ or Labour Office

🧭 Lawyer’s recommendation

👉 The key is: be honest – don’t try to look heroic.
If care is genuinely needed, don’t act as though you’re fine. Trying not to “burden the system” can cost you important financial support.

🎯 Based on experience, when:

  • the documentation is thorough,

  • the specific care tasks are described clearly,

  • the caregiver is present at the inquiry,

…the result is much fairer.
